- SMS · Your bank: “Your OTP for login is 482913. Do not share it with anyone.” You just tapped Log in on your bank’s app. Real. You just asked for this code.
- WhatsApp · New number: “Hi Mum, new number, my phone broke. Can you pay this bill for me? I’ll send it back tonight.” Scam. A familiar role on a number you don’t know.
- SMS · Delivery update: “Your order was delivered at 4:12 pm. Rate your experience in the app.” You ordered this earlier today. Real. It tells you something. It asks for nothing.
- QR code at a shop counter · Sticker by the till: “SCAN TO RECEIVE $50 CASHBACK. Enter your card PIN to claim.” Scam. Receiving money never needs your PIN.
- SMS · Utility notice: “Your power will be disconnected tonight at 9:30 pm. Call our officer now: 555-0142” Scam. A disconnection threat with a deadline.
- SMS · Your bank: “Your statement for September is ready. Open the app to view it.” You get this on the same day every month. Real. It tells you something and asks for nothing.
- SMS · Recruiter: “Congratulations! You are shortlisted for a work-from-home job. Pay a $19 registration fee to confirm.” Scam. A real job never charges you to start.
